What qualifications do you need to become an interior designer?

The field of interior design may seem glamorous and exciting, but it takes a certain set of skills and qualifications to be successful. An interior designer is responsible for creating aesthetically pleasing and functional environments inside residential, commercial and industrial properties. The job requires a combination of creativity, knowledge of architecture, construction, colour theory, lighting, textiles and a good eye for detail. Aspiring Interior Designers need to understand that in order to pursue this career path they must meet all of the necessary requirements and qualifications.

When considering an education in interior design there are two routes which can lead you towards success: apprenticeship or traditional post secondary education program. An apprenticeship typically involves working under the guidance of an experienced Interior Designer who will provide firsthand training and experience in the field. However, many employers prefer to hire employees who have a formal qualification backed by a degree from an accredited college or university.

When looking at formal education options it is important to research colleges that offer degree programs in Interior Design such as art or design schools, community colleges, universities or specialized private institutions that focus solely on this field. Usually interior design programs start with foundational courses such as material studies (textiles), colour theory, software (CAD), project management basics along with drafting techniques for illustration purposes later being supplemented by more advanced studio-based classes related to the field overall - commercial environment design, residential spaces planning and styling etc. Upon completion many students will receive an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Interior Design verifying their educational attainment level and setting them up for entry-level employment opportunities or further on graduate studies related to interior architecture and/or urban planning spheres if desired; some disciplines may require specialists to hold graduate level degrees which are available at many universities across the US.
